World Market Wood Coffee Table – This is possibly my favorite piece I’ve built so far. It really is something for my own home, so I may be a little biased, but a lot of love has been put into this table.
I’ve been drooling over the “Aiden” table from World Market for quite some time, and $289.99 for a coffee table isn’t a bad price, but I could do better. There are just a few things I don’t like about it.

First, even though the top is “made of real mango wood,” it’s just a thin layer of board. Anyway, I will adjust the color of the wood (a bit too bright for me). Also, some of the reviews I read mentioned the wheels falling off and I really wanted the look of the oversized wheels.

I’ve been wanting to practice my soldering since my first soldering lessons, so I finally decided to give this coffee table a try.
Building it is actually quite simple. I started by building two frames (42″ x 28″) from 1.25″ wide angle iron, 1/8″ thick. I used a saw (different from a hacksaw) to cut the corners. Then I used a MIG welder to run a bead on the top and outside seams.
I cut four pins from the same iron angle at 10″. Then I flipped the first frame over on its side and soldered one pin on the outside of each corner.

I flipped the second frame over on its side, stacked the pins, and soldered the pieces together. Now I’ve got quite a few rectangles with an open iron corner in the middle.
I picked up my steel from Industrial Metal Supply and found some great, heavy duty, 6-inch v-groove steel wheels. I searched online, through thrift stores, and great lists of cakes at good prices. I might as well have been looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Cheap, oversized steel cakes don’t exist.
When I saw these wheels, I started thinking about how to attach them to my coffee table. I came up with a cheap and somewhat easy solution. I will be sharing instructions on them soon. This system will act as hard (non-rotating) wheels for a number of different projects.

To attach them, I drilled a 1/2″ hole in the top of the wheel frame, as well as all four corners of the bottom rail of the frame. Then I ran a 3/4″ long bolt. /2″ through the bracket and bottom rail, and secure it with a nut.
With my framework done, it’s time to tackle the top part. I was really looking for “pallet-ish” wood, but I’ve experienced pulling pallets apart (as enjoyable as going to the dentist), and trying to find enough slats of the same size and thickness. not. not easy.
A good alternative to wood pallets is a fence. This type is rough sawn, cheap and comes in a variety of widths. For my table size, the design required 8, 5.5″ slats. I simply cut them all to length and attached them to a piece of scrap OSB, cut to size, using glue wood and nail finishes.

I drilled 10 holes in the top rail of the metal frame and fixed the top with wood screws from the bottom. The bottom shelf, I cut to fit the inner corner iron. Just be sure to cut the corners of the OSB, below, to make room for the wheel bolts and nuts.
I did some things differently. For starters, I didn’t warp my corners. In fact, they are not real gussets at all. I also have a tutorial on how to create those.
Second, I chose to add a shipping pin in each corner to bring out a small detail at the top. Probably my favorite detail.

The slats and finishes of the wood also vary. The finish I use is the same as the wooden crate guide.
I REALLY love the 6″ wheels! To finish off the metal frame, I selectively sanded areas with a fine grinding wheel. The wheels get a lot of love from a wire brush. There, I played around with a few different rollerblades I bought while at Industrial Metal Supply I think I was able to achieve the rusty, dull look I wanted without having to. do too much.
I’ve asked this before, but I’ll ask again. Why haven’t you heard of Korean women? You hear about women making beautiful things out of wood, but rarely do you meet a woman who can weld.

It’s really fun! And it’s really not that hard. I would recommend keeping someone nearby to help you set up your speed and voltage until you have some experience. Also, practice makes perfect. I still have ways to go with my soldering, but I can do it well enough for my needs.
