I received my desk after a 2 month wait which is understandable due to COVID 19. They did a great job from making the desk to shipping it. I like how it turns out. One small thing is that I need to redo one of the legs because it was off center and sticking out 1.5″. But it’s not a big deal. Please see the pictures of the board for your judgement! Last spring, Elsie and I were talking about coffee table styles that would look great in her living room. We both liked the idea of a living table, but soon discovered that nice looking ones were prohibitively expensive. We’re talking about $1,000. Yes! But the more I looked, the more I fell in love with the idea itself. I finally decided to make a living style coffee table myself if it was the last thing I did! Give me tree rounds or give me death!
This whole project cost me about $215, which shocks me now even as I type this. If you want to make your own, I have some tips for you! But you might want to start praying or crossing your fingers now for a little more luck.
Planning Your Coffee Table The first thing to do when planning your coffee table is to decide on the size and shape you want. I chose a relatively round shape because I had a lot of space to fill the “L” of my sectional sofa. If I had a long, straight couch, I might have chosen a longer, rectangular piece of wood.

Be sure to carefully consider the size of your coffee table as well! Living tables can look bigger than you expect, making your couch pale in comparison. So if you are unsure of the size, I would err on the smaller side. Also keep in mind the thickness of the lumber you want. I was sure that I wanted a plank of wood that was thicker than the 2-3″ inches most commonly found at edge lumber dealers. Because of the thicker plank, I had to make shorter legs to keep the coffee table at the height of my couch. (It’s actually a few inches shorter than our couch, which is ideal! We can still put the legs up.)

1. Round Round—The rarest type of tree slice is stone and is difficult to obtain in large slices. The burl is cut from protrusions on the tree trunk – you know, the guys with warts. These slices will have stunning patterns through the grain rather than the uniform rings you see in tree rings. Because they are anomalies and not a predictable part of the tree’s growth, the blocks are usually very expensive and are used for veneering and fine woodworking. You may be able to work with a tree removal service to grab the shavings from the trees they have cut down.

2. Roundwood—A roundwood is just a horizontally sawn slice of wood that shows the rings of the tree and is relatively round in shape. The actual shape of a round tree will vary depending on the species as well as the individual tree. The base of a tree, near the trunk, will give a more irregular round tree shape. The higher the tree is cut, however, the more uniform the border will be.
3. Tree slab—A tree slab is a long slice of a log that includes the raw edge of the tree. It is cut along the length of the tree and not along its width. This is a good choice for a table that you want to fill a longer space. The downside of long tree boards is that the cut edges on both ends of the lumber will not have a live edge. This may or may not be important to you.
The most time-consuming and frustrating part of this whole project is definitely getting the lumber for the table top. I spent many late nights searching local Craigslist ads as well as listings in nearby states. I searched Etsy and eBay and thought about how much money I was willing to spend to get the table I wanted. For a while I was thinking that $300 would be the best price I could get on an oval plate about 16″x24″. The slab was not finished and was only 2 inches thick. Not my ideal, and actually more than I was hoping to pay.
