The fun thing about this coffee table makeover is that I decided on its color based on a new backdrop that I recently purchased. I’ve been dying to use it and wanted to use a paint color that would work with the backdrop. Who does such crazy things? So I pulled this coffee table off the shelf thinking that the ugly honey color would look great in black!

Initially, I was going to paint the entire table. The coffee table makeover had to be a painted table top as well as a bottom. I considered a black bottom with layers of paint colors left over from previous pieces on top. Do not waste, do not want.
But once I got it out of the truck I decided I would sand the top and see how it looked under the orange sheen of the original honey finish. It was a gorgeous sunny day so why not spend it outside. I decided a while ago that I no longer use an electric sander in my shop, I hate to admit that I used to but it is very dusty and dirty. That’s mine! Look at that wonderful wood grain.

For some reason, I thought the table top was a thin veneer, but to my surprise, it’s actually completely solid wood. Do the happy dance here. It had some serious gouges and dents but look at that grain! Even the meager remnants of gouges that are now mere dings have serious potential.

The coffee table is first flipped over and the base and legs are pure black and distressed to reveal pieces of light wood. Then I flipped it over again and put a very pretty chocolate stain on top. Wow, that wood grain is amazing. I can’t believe it was hidden under the orange glow of the previous finish. Also distressed black is always a personal favorite of mine.
