Small Trays For Coffee Table – For a while, my coffee table served as a Hot Wheels race track and a kiddie village. However, as my boys got older, I was able to make this coffee table look grown up again! Now, with the help of some blog friends, I’m sharing tips on how to create an elegant coffee table so you can transform your family room.
I’m excited to feature this coffee table design as part of a monthly Pinterest challenge hosted by Cindy from Route 407 in the District.

This month, our inspiration photo came from Yvonne at StoneGable who shared her summer open house tour. It’s a sight to behold!
Yvonne always has expert decorating tips and interior design secrets on her blog. I promise you will be glad you visited.
In my vignette below, I’ll walk through how I took elements of Yvonne’s photo and created my own version using items I already had on hand.

Using Yvonne’s tray design as a starting point, I went on a shopping spree around the house. I identified six main elements that I wanted to resonate in my vignette:
Luckily, I already had a few of these items in my inventory, though I’ll admit that most of them weren’t on my coffee table…yet!
You’ll notice that I had to improvise on a few items, but the effect is about the same. Can you spot where I made substitutions?
Coffee Table Decor Ideas To Inspire You
For a rustic coffee table aesthetic, I used a light colored rectangular tray. This tray was a Home Goods find, but I will link to similar items at the end of this post.
I’ve seen so many different tray styles on Pinterest, from mirror/acrylic to vintage/wood and everything in between. Since my coffee table and side tables have a dark, rustic feel, I felt a lighter woven tray would provide a good contrast while still remaining casual.
*Note: I like to position my tray at an angle versus the rectangular coffee table for more visual interest.

This French country pitcher is one of my favorite purchases of all time! It’s a whoop though, at about 16×9 inches…
While I love the way it looks in the living room, it usually belongs on our dining room table, where it doesn’t deal with nearly as much traffic from twin 5-year-old boys. However, I do enjoy how the swirls on the decorative box mimic the crest on the pitcher.
To balance the drama of the urn, I added a boxwood cabinet (stacked on three books), a rustic ceramic bird and a decorative box with a variety of woven and straw balls.

Again, I didn’t do any extra shopping for this challenge, so the little decorative balls inside the box serve as a little nod to Yvonne’s original metal ball.
Notice that I also changed the pillows on the couch in the background. While I dig the neutral aesthetic, I can’t live without pops of color. I think the patterns on the pillows add a different feel to the vignette. what are your thoughts
A few years ago, I found a great deal on boxwood countertops at Target. You’d never know the difference between this little boxwood tree and others I’ve seen in high-end home decor stores. Real dried leaves!

By the way, the coffee table books are very deliberately reversed because the spines are too dark for this scene.
My little country bird usually sits above the TV in an art niche, but she insisted on being a part of this vignette. Who am I to deny her?

Tips To Style A Round Coffee Table In Your Living Room
Coffee tables come in all sizes and many shapes. Whether it’s a hard surface, or something soft like a large ottoman, decorating your coffee table should be fun, and it should reflect your personal taste. A coffee table is the centerpiece of any room, so it’s the perfect place to display your favorite things. Find below a list of suggestions to get your creative juices flowing, followed by some easy ways to incorporate your ideas into your home decor.
Tip: If you’re looking for a new coffee table, consider buying a table with two tiers. This lower level doubles your surface area and can be used as storage, or to display more of your treasures.
Before we go any further, I want to remind you that the following is simply a collection of ideas. There is no right or wrong way to design your coffee table. Follow your instincts. Use items that speak to you, items that reflect your family’s interests, and most importantly, items that reflect your personal style. I like neutral design, so this is what I usually use on our coffee table…with, of course, touches of blue. If you are a color lover, you will definitely incorporate it into your coffee table design. What you’re getting at is this: When someone walks into a room, they should be able to figure out your style just by looking at your coffee table!

The versatility of the trays is amazing, and they are the perfect starting point for any coffee table. There is no hard and fast rule about what size or shape to use. It’s fine to use a round tray on a round table… and it’s equally fine to use a square or rectangular tray.
Trays are your most important layering tool. Start by placing a tray on your coffee table. Everything you add next will have a cohesive and stylish vibe because the tray brings everything together. Stack items on top of each other, making sure to change the heights.
Coffee tables and books go hand in hand. There have been several times in my life that I have bought a book simply because I liked the cover. Books with beautiful covers bring personality and uniqueness to a coffee table… So collect your most beautiful books, or ones that have a special meaning, and start stacking. Gardening books, design books, or books about flowers, are perfect for this!
The Magic Of Trays And Books
Think outside the box when it comes to headlights. Of course candles are wonderful, but a candle is not the only thing that looks good in a lantern. A small nest full of eggs, a pot with fresh or artificial greenery, moss balls of various sizes, scented potpourri, pine cones or balls of yarn are just a few suggestions for ways to add interest to the lantern. Bowls and baskets can be used for layering, just like trays, but they add interesting shape and texture. A large, neutral bowl can be used literally anywhere in your decor, but it’s an unusual tool for decorating a coffee table. Fill it with vegetables, or place a pitcher in it for a classic farm look. I’ve had the bowl pictured above for at least 20 years, maybe more. It was a birthday gift from a friend, and it’s one of my most treasured decor accessories. It hangs around our house, but most of the time it resides on our coffee table.
When it comes to layering, baskets do the same thing as bowls, but their superpower is adding texture. If you have a dark coffee table, consider using a light-colored basket for contrast. Layer unexpected things, and try to include something tall.
