Round Live Edge Coffee Table – As you know, we recently moved into a new apartment and I’ve been itching to make a new coffee table for the space that can double as a dining area (studio living, for the win)! So after getting a super fun slab at a local lumber dealer, I knew I had to turn it into a live edge coffee table ASAP. If you’ve been around here for a while, then you already know how much I suck at live fringe projects, especially when it comes to character creep. This was a project that took me several weekends to create, but all the TLC was worth it! Even cooler, thanks to my friends at Rust-oleum, it will probably last us a lifetime and a half!
I have good news and bad news about this project. The good news is that the table was AH-mazing. The bad news is that even though I made it for our new apartment, my mom loved it so much she stole it.
Round Live Edge Coffee Table
I seriously love live edge slabs made of wood…and I totally scored when I came across a local wood dealer (1 Of A Kind Live Edge Slabs) and his collection of wood cookies. I’ve been wanting to create my own version of a round table for a long time, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. How I did it!
Custom Solid Wood Table Tops
1. The first thing I had to do was level the slab. This can be done in many different ways, but for this particular slab I used a combination of sandpaper and a sled with a router (I used my friend Brandon’s tutorial to make my line)!
2. I had a lot of gaps and holes going through my tiles that I wanted to keep. So to do this, I taped off the bottom of the tile (to stop the epoxy from leaking) and then mixed up a small batch of Varathane Super Glaze in old brown.
This thing rocks! The pigment is already pre-mixed into the resin, so you get consistent color every time! It’s also a 1:1 ratio, meaning I had to mix equal parts resin and accelerator and just mix by hand!

3. After the epoxy set I did another round of smoothing and sanding and spent some time here cleaning up the live edge as well.
4. I had a pretty epic crack in my slab, so I decided to add some decorative wood bow ties to prevent the crack from spreading further. I used a router and bow tie template for this and it made a huge difference (you can see it in action in the YouTube video)!
5. After installing the bow ties, I gave the plate a final sanding to 220 grit and then it was time to finish! I mixed up another batch of Varathane Super Glaze in Aged Brown and poured it over the entire tile (the color

My plate was definitely a little dehydrated so I added a second coat of clear and it dried beautifully!
6. After the slab was finished, all that was left was to add some nice table legs (designed by my friend Chris at Four Eyes Furniture)!
