Belgian house Vincent Sheppard designs and manufactures a large collection of furniture with a bohemian chic spirit. The story begins in 1992 with the desire to preserve the weaving technique called “Loyd Loom”, invented in the early 20th century by American businessman Marshall B. Loyd. The technique involves wrapping Kraft paper around a wire. A collection of high-quality Loyd Loom chairs and armchairs in refined tones allows Vincent Sheppard to find rapid, international success. In recent years, Vincent Sheppard has been expanding its range to offer complete universes. It is first a beautiful range of wooden tables that completed the catalog and today, quite naturally, a range of lighting and small wicker furniture that he offers us. Lighting specialist Vraiment Beau essentially presents this part of the Vincent Sheppard collection in their catalogue. Made of hand-woven wicker, a living material that makes each footstool unique. Rattan is a fast growing palm that needs to be boiled and dried in the sun before being tamed into different ways in which we can sit, rest or decorate our homes. This is where weavers come in. “We couldn’t make authentic wicker products without them. They have skills that cannot be copied by machines,” says Andreas Fredriksson, who designed some of our wicker furniture together with the artisans.
With rattan it is possible to create round and organic shapes that are difficult to achieve with other materials. Each wicker vine changes color and shape. This makes it impossible to manufacture two pieces of furniture exactly alike. On the other hand, you get unique items with a warm, homely feel. “There are simpler materials to work with, but the vibrancy of rattan is what gives it character. It can create a nice contrast to other things many of us have at home,” says Andreas.
If rattan is cared for well, it can be transformed into almost anything, even generously shaped furniture that can fit in a flat package. But design is not just up to the designer and craftsman. “You have to cooperate with Mother Nature and find some new solutions too – but the payoff when you manage to harmonize everything makes it worth it”, concludes Andreas.
