No Coffee Table Living Room – As I put my new house together one layer at a time – I went back and forth depending on the weather or not, I actually needed a coffee table, and you know what, I didn’t. absolutely don’t need it! We have an active 2 year old, an 85lb Black Lab/Rottweiler/Pitbull mix and 2 crazy cats – so function is far more important to our lifestyle.
As I work on my list of decors that I want to add to my new home, I finally see everything come to light. We’ve painted almost every room on the first floor, I’ve bought a rug, some new wall decor and some rugs – everything is finally in place. But the one thing I always went back and forth over was whether I wanted to add an ottoman on wheels to move around the room or a hard top coffee table. In fact, we fuck live in our living room. We eat here, we work here, we relax here, so move a hardtop coffee table whenever we want to play with a baby shark, build a pillow fort, or pull out a Gazillion toy to play with at once, just isn’t realistic!
No Coffee Table Living Room
So I replace! We have nesting tables in the corner with a lamp on it, I pull out the bottom one to use as a TV tray – and I have a C-shaped side table that slides under the section – This one which I’m leaving out as I can easily move it around or tuck it under the couch if we’re using floor space.

Our living room is part of a large L with the dining area in the back corner of the room. The living room has a half wall up to the stairs – and as responsible parents we thought we wouldn’t put the section against this wall so our toddler couldn’t crawl over the top and flip the wall on the stairs. Yes, the stream would be so much better, but our child is now safe using it from across the room. The space overall isn’t very big, it’s about 15’x20′ with a walking path through it and a kids area behind the floating section. If you have a larger area, you might consider keeping something that you can easily move around so the room doesn’t seem to be missing anything. It really is a functional piece that will fill the room properly.

My husband being a senior executive chef at a major university, he’s all about cleanliness and organization, as I’m an interior designer. If you’ve checked out my previous article on how I organized my life when we moved across the country (Tips for decluttering and transitioning to your new home) – then you know I’m hyper-focused on making it easy. and the function of a space. My kid has a shitload of toys – just like any kid, right? So how can we hide them and maintain our family space without them interfering? As design becomes more refined and lifestyle-focused, yet still fashionable, I’m finding new, creative ways to omit clutter and make spaces livable and functional. In our living room I have my old toy box (hand painted by my grandmother when I was a child). It’s a nice piece of wood that we keep almost half of the wall facing the stairs – and my daughter’s activity table where she snacks and makes art. But behind the section is where all the kid stuff is tucked away, that way when you walk into the space you’re not inundated with kid bullshit right off the bat! I just added the bookshelf (which I recently got from my grandparents) to store all of her books with baskets underneath for her toys. Next to it is a vintage wooden beer box for his “little” toys. Behind the sofa, instead of a console table (for now) are her shopping carts and strollers – below eye level and out of sight!
