Matching Coffee And End Tables – One of the comments I heard a lot when we toured showrooms at High Point at Market (by the salesperson who gave us the tour) last fall was “Of course this is way too much together, but individually, just amazing.”
The worst part is when the big box “Get a free TV with the sofa” stores sell all three together and you can’t even split them up? It does no one any favors. Does the consumer who knows nothing about design think that’s exactly what you should do?
Matching Coffee And End Tables
If you’ve had a living room or family room without coffee or end tables just a little too long, here are some coordinated sets for some inspiration.
Gracie Oaks Hannerose 3 Piece Coffee Table Set & Reviews
This first inspiration picture has two coffee tables! Sometimes, if you have a big room, that’s what it takes!
If your living room is where you also watch TV, an ottoman (above and below) is always a good idea instead of a hard coffee table. You can always put a tray for drinks on the ottoman.
When coordinating tables, a good rule of thumb is to repeat the same wood color twice. Or it does not necessarily need to be repeated in final tables. The coffee table in this room I have designed is not repeated in the tables, but the same color is in the sisal area and the mirror above the console table.
Unique End Tables And Coffee Tables
Make sure you keep the shapes different enough so they go together. For example, for this living room (above) I wouldn’t have also included the angled table from the photo just before this one.
The rustic side table here adds textural interest, but isn’t paired with other tables that would also clash. Notice that the color of the rustic side table has been repeated in the table lamps.
A stump can go anywhere, so attach one to a side table that you can also sit on. I love the dramatic mirrors between the french doors in this photo instead of drapery!
Ways To Style Coffee Tables
Hope this has inspired you to get your room done! Then, don’t forget lamps! No one ever has enough. I’ve never been in an interior that had too many lamps, so that’s saying something!

When I was looking for a new coffee table, I came across some lovely side tables that would fit perfectly! Of course, they don’t match at all. Neither should they. Now promise me you won’t buy a “matching set” of furniture. You know what I mean, the ones they sell at your local Raymour & Flanigan as a set of 3 (coffee table plus 2 matching side tables). Don’t fall for it. Please. You can do so much better!
Decor Match Maker: 10 Coffee & Side Table Pairings That Just Plain Work
One of my main goals in life is to help you achieve a look for your home that is unique to you. Not a home that looks like it was bought straight from a catalogue. The best way to do that is to find pieces you love (lead actors) and then find others who will play a supporting role. Mixing furniture will make your home look like it has been put together over time, and will ultimately give you much more satisfaction than a store-matched set of furniture.
Mixing up your furniture is much easier than you think! Here are some simple guidelines to get you started.
Vary the furniture shapes. If you have a round coffee table, buy a rectangular end table, and vice versa.

Mix together the materials. For example: if your coffee table is wooden, pair it with marble or concrete side tables. The change in texture will do wonders to create a dynamic and beautiful space. If you prefer all three, all is well. Just be sure to vary the shapes and spots as well.
Consider the visual weight. If your coffee table is thick and chunky, look for a delicate side table. Likewise, if you have an open and airy coffee table, look for a side table that is hefty and sturdy.
Keep the style somewhat coherent. It’s fun to mix different furniture, but if your tables speak the same language (like mid-century modern), it will create a more cohesive look. See below for an illustration…
