Q: I love reading your tips every week in the paper, but I’ve never seen anyone ask this question. What’s the worst furniture arrangement you’ve ever seen, or one thing I should never do in my living room?

A: The best part about decorating a home is that there really aren’t any rules…outside of function and making sure your home feels right to you. And I’d like to think about what you usually want to do, not what you shouldn’t do.

But I have to say that it bothers me if the living room furniture is too far apart or there is no coffee table in front of the sofa. So I would think I wouldn’t. The table opposite the sofa is a useful place to put a drink or your feet, and it also completes the arrangement. At the same time, if you have children and need a place to play, I would recommend a light coffee table or a soft ottoman that can be easily moved. An area rug helps connect furniture with or without a coffee table.

Anchor the entire room with a focal piece, such as a fireplace if you have one, or a TV, or a large armoire or closet. Arrange the rest of the furniture so that your family can see the TV or fireplace, and each other for conversation. A variety of seating and lounging options, including a sofa or sectional and some chairs, will keep everyone comfortable.

The end tables next to the chairs also tie the layout together both visually and functionally. Benches, stools, ottomans and smaller accent chairs provide flexible seating as well as a place to put one’s feet. At parties, your guests can move these pieces around. As I’ve been building my new house one layer at a time, I’ve been switching back and forth depending on the weather or not, I really need a coffee table and guess what, I totally don’t! We have an active 2 year old 85lb Black Lab/Rottweiler/Pit bull Mix and 2 crazy cats so function is much more important to our lifestyle.

As I work through my list of designer decor that I want to add to my new home, I can finally see everything coming to light. We have painted almost all the rooms on the first floor, I have bought a carpet, new wall decor and a couple of rugs – everything is finally in place. But one thing I always went back and forth on was if I wanted to add an ottoman on casters to move around the room or on a solid coffee table. Truth be told, we LIVE in our living room. We eat here, we work here, we relax here, so any time we want to sit down for a Baby Shark, build a pillow fort, or pull out a gazillion toys to play with right away, it has to be moved to a solid coffee table. real!

So I replaced! We have nesting tables in the corner with a lamp, I pull out the bottom one to use as a TV stand, and I have a C-shaped side table that goes under the sectional. I left this one out because I can move it around easily. if we use floor space, stay around it or stay under the sofa.

Living Room Ideas For Small Spaces With Big Style

If you have a young and active family like ours, it might be time to ditch the traditional coffee table and change your lifestyle in your space!

Our living room is part of a large L shape and the dining room is in the back corner of the room. The living room has a half wall to the stairwell, and as responsible parents we figured we wouldn’t put a slat on that wall so our baby couldn’t crawl over the top and tumble over the wall onto the stairs. Yes, the flow would be SO much better, but our child is now safe using it on the other side of the room. The room overall isn’t terribly big, about 15″ x 20″ with a walkway through it and an area for the kids behind the floating section. IF you have a larger area, you may want to consider keeping something that you can easily move around so that the room doesn’t feel like it’s missing anything. It really is a functional piece that will fill the room properly.

Since my husband is a senior chef at a large college, he cares about cleanliness and organization as I am an interior designer. If you’ve checked out my previous post on how I organized my life when we moved across the country (Tips for Organizing and Moving into Your New Home), you’ll know that I’ve been very focused on the comfort and functionality of the space. My child has a lot of toys – like any child, right? So how do we hide them and still keep our family space out of the way? As design becomes more sophisticated and lifestyle oriented, but still on trend, I find new creative ways to de-clutter and make spaces livable and functional. In our living room I have my old toy box (hand painted by my grandmother when I was a child). It’s a beautiful piece of wood that we keep on the half wall in front of the stairs and my daughter’s activity table where she eats snacks and creates art. But behind the sectional is hidden all the children’s stuff, so that when you enter the room, you are not immediately flooded with children’s nonsense! I just added a bookcase (that I recently got from my grandparents) to house all her books with baskets for her toys. Next to it is a vintage wooden beer crate for her “little” toys. Behind the couch, in place of the console table (for now) are her shopping carts and strollers – below eye level and out of place!
