How To Decorate A Tray For A Coffee Table – This week I teamed up with my friend Carian at Titlewood Farms. We’re doing a spring refresh in five different rooms, with a favorite new item in each room. Today I updated the living room with wooden decorative dining trays.

I bought these decorating trays last week and I love them! I carry them around our house and find that I can use them in almost every room. I decided to use the trays in the living room and I love how they add interest to the coffee table.

Serving trays come in all shapes, sizes and colors. I own some things made of metal, plastic, straw, mint and wood. I was looking for some large trays that were affordable and like this set I found on Amazon Home.

These white decorative trays come in a pair. They measure 19 inches square by 15 3/4 inches square, which is the perfect size for decorating anywhere in your home.

These two vintage white large and medium square serving trays are perfect for holding breakfast or drinks and food on a table or cabinet top.

Before you start decorating or decorating your home, my best advice is to start with what you already have. When I start decorating, I take a basket and walk around our house looking for interesting things. I usually end up going back a lot but “Searching” always surprises me with how many amazing things I can always find to include.

I’m always careful not to over-embellish when styling. I like a simple style. I always use an odd number of items, whether I think of it or not. Don’t ask me why, I like them better the way they are!

Now that I like the monochromatic look of our living room, I decided not to use a lot of color. It is a simple, easy and fun way to decorate.

I love the look of this table. The trays are made from individual pieces of wood and I love the design.

In my vignette below, I walk through how I took elements from Yvonne’s photo and created my own version using items I already had on hand.

Using Yvonne’s tray decor as a starting point, I went shopping around the house. I saw six main elements that I wanted to echo in my self-image:

Decorate Your Tiered Tray For Christmas

Luckily, I’ve got some of these items in my inventory, although I admit most of them haven’t been on my coffee table…yet!

You’ll notice that I have to improve on a few items, but the result is roughly the same. Do you know where I replaced it?

For a rustic coffee table aesthetic, I used a light colored rectangular tray. This tray was a search for furniture, but I’ll link to similar items at the end of this post.

I’ve seen so many different tray styles on Pinterest, from glass/acrylic to vintage/wood and everything in between. Since my coffee table and side tables have a dark, rustic feel, I felt that a simple woven tray would provide a nice contrast and still stay classic.

*Note: I like to place my tray against a rectangular coffee table for more visual interest.

Coffee Table Decor Ideas And How To Style Them

I love the way it looks in the living room, usually at our dining room table where our 5 year old twin boys don’t get much traffic. I love how the swirls on the jewelry box look like the logo on the urinal.

To balance the drama of the urn, I added boxwood topiary (stacked on three bookshelves), a whimsical ceramic bird, and a box decorated with assorted woven and rattan orbs.

Again, I didn’t do any extra shopping for this challenge, so the small decorative spots in the box serve as a slight nod to Yvonne’s original metal orb.

You’ll notice that I changed the pillows on the couch in the background. While I’m digging the all-neutral aesthetic, I can’t live without a pop of color. I think the patterns on the pillows add a different feel to the vignette. What’s your idea?

A few years ago, I got a great deal on boxwood topiaries at Target. You’ll never know the difference between this little boxwood and others I’ve seen in high-end home decor stores. Real dried leaves!

By the way, the spines are too dark for this scene, so the coffee table books are very deliberately returned.
