The Noguchi table is named after its designer: Isamu Noguchi. The table was first manufactured and sold by Herman Miller in 1947 just after the end of World War II. The table has remained one of the best-selling coffee tables for more than seven decades.

Instead, it was before the Second World War, he had to put his career on hold while he “went West”. He didn’t tell anyone at the time that he was sent to an internment camp during World War II.

Japanese Americans were treated poorly at the time, and Noguchi was no different. When he left the camp, he found that many of the models he had designed had been destroyed.

, but he also felt that the industry was trying to “erase” him and his works. It was a very dark time for Noguchi. When he was finally released and able to try to save his life, he found his desk in an advertisement for Robsjohn-Gibbings.

The company never rejected his work, but also never commissioned or paid him for his design.

Enraged, he decided to confront the company. Instead of honoring his work, he was told that anyone could “design a three-legged chair.” What happened next is history. Noguchi decided it was time to take control of his own destiny.

The original table was made from found materials. His original prototype included a glass plate he found and carved pieces of wood. He used the table as his own work of art, creating a table with fine lines and an aesthetic that made it as functional as it was beautiful.

George Nelson, the company’s lead designer, was inspired by the world Noguchi was making. He went to Noguchi’s studio and that’s when he came across Noguchi’s coffee table. Nelson wrote a groundbreaking article around the table at the time, aptly titled “How to Build Your Table.”
