Glass Display Top Coffee Table
A cardboard box buried in the garage is no home for your grandfather’s hand tools or your hard-earned collectibles. Why not display it properly, on a coffee table with a sink insert and removable top that you built yourself? With little more than a few lengths of wood, a few feet of stock and a sheet of acrylic, you’ll have a DIY display coffee table worthy of the history on display.
Display Coffee Table With Drawers
Our shadowbox coffee table cut list is based on a table leg with a 2¼-by-2¼-inch section at the top that is 5 inches long. This unturned part of the pole provides a flat for attaching the apron pieces; the width will affect the dimensions of the table top frame, so be sure to adjust your measurements accordingly if you use different sized legs.
Using a miter saw, cut the 1×5 apron pieces and the 1×1 support strips and screw strips to size.
On each side of the apron, glue and place a long support strip flush with the bottom edge, and a short screw strip flush with each end. The support will hold the bottom of the plywood display. The screw strips create blocks for attaching the apron pieces to the legs. To lock the strips, first glue them in place using a pneumatic nail gun and 1¼-inch nails. Then, using a countersink drill bit, make a pilot hole in the strip and sink a 1¼-inch screw through the strip and into the apron.

Apply wood glue to the edges of the apron assembly, and place it on the legs so that everything is even on the top and inside of the legs, as shown. Drill pilot holes through the screw strips and into the legs, then fasten them with 1¼-inch screws. Continue connecting each leg and apron piece until the perimeter of the base is complete.
Place the tablecloth upside down on the floor. Align the inner edge of the apron with the outer edge of the bottom of the display so that the frame would slide on the floor if not for the screw strip in the corner. Mark the outline of the screw strip at each corner, as shown.
Using a jigsaw, cut notches for the screw strips in each corner of the bottom of the display. Tuck the bottom into the base of the table so that it rests on the support strip along the bottom edge of each apron section. Glue the bottom in place with 1-inch nails.

Miter the ends of each table top frame and 1×1 lip section at opposite 45 degree angles. The detail on the top edge of the baseboard should line the inside of the frame.
Apply wood glue to the 1×1 edge strips and lay them flat on the matching frame pieces, flush with the outside edges and mitered ends. Using a pneumatic nail gun, attach the side strips to the frame pieces using 1-inch nails.
Once all the frame pieces and strips have been constructed, apply wood glue and a touch of cyanoacrylate glue to the mitered edges, one joint at a time. Join the corners to make a rectangle, then nail from the outside edge through each miter joint using 1¼-inch nails.

Using a permanent marker, draw a cut line on the acrylic sheet using a straight line. Cut along the lines using a jigsaw with a metal cutting knife.
TOH TIP: To prevent the jigsaw shoe from scratching the acrylic, tape painter’s tape to the bottom.
Place the acrylic sheet on the base of the table so that, as you look down, the corners match the corners of the legs. Place the frame on top so that it locks around the acrylic and legs. Fill the holes and fastener joints with wood filler, then sand and paint the entire assembly.
