Design Ideas For Coffee Tables – I’m sharing my favorite coffee table decor ideas to help you have a beautiful, functional coffee table!

I’m asking for a lot of coffee table decor! After taking a good look at the two coffee tables in our house, I realized that I needed five decors that I always use and I’m going to share those coffee table decor ideas with you today!

Design Ideas For Coffee Tables

I always use large trays on coffee tables. Always. I love how they keep everything organized, and if you want to use the coffee table for playing games or serving food, you can take it all away with a simple lift. Pillows are also a great way to add contrasting texture or color for an interesting look.

For the family room coffee table, I went with a 28″ square wooden tray that takes up most of the coffee table, but leaves room for my husband to put his feet up (we keep the designated “foot pillow” to do it that way – lol!):

I had the hardest time finding the largest square tray that I really liked, but ended up finding the best one on Etsy. The store I bought it in is no longer available, but you can find a tray that looks almost exactly the same. They are offered in a variety of colors, from velvety matte or glossy. This large tray is expensive, but I will have it for years. I love that if I change my color scheme in the future, I can paint it instead of buying a new tray.

Coffee Table Decor Ideas That Don’t Require A Home Stylist

On the ottoman/coffee table in our living room, I mostly use light woven cushions to add lightness and texture. I recently bought a good size and great price for this large tray:

I use flowers and natural elements throughout my home because nothing else adds life, so it’s no wonder one of my favorite coffee table decor ideas! When we have a ton of blooms in our yard this summer, I keep small bouquets on my coffee table:

You can use other natural elements to add life – a bowl of pine cones, cotton, or elements from the sea such as driftwood, shells, coral – just a few ideas. The best thing about natural elements is that there are so many on your doorstep that you can find and use for free!

Books are another must for me. They are great for adding a sophisticated look, as well as having fun coffee table books that your family and guests can read. Since I’m a design lover, most of my (big surprise) focus is on design. Books about the area you live in, your favorite state or country to vacation in, or your favorite hobby are other great choices.

You might also want to consider getting a bunch of your photos from your phone and computer – these are future coffee table goals for me! If you want to add some color or pattern to your coffee table, a simple way is to use your favorite fabric scraps to make a fabric book:

Coffee Table Decorating Ideas

Along with some coffee table books, I always add a bookshelf or two. These can range from a large gold wishbone (similar to this one) to a decorative magnifying glass like the one I used in the fabric-covered book or a small piece of coral):

Decorative boxes are the best! There are so many cute options, and they’re great for clearing out things you don’t want to clutter up your desk. I need an extra TV on the coffee table in our family room, our flashlight, and photo flash drives, while I make a laptop in the sectional:

Once you’ve got these essentials in place, it’s time to have fun and add a few fun things you love! For me, it’s often copper animals (#obsessed) like this pair of copper cranes (there are similarities):

Bearings are your most important layering tool. Start by placing a tray on the coffee table. Whatever you add next will have a cohesive and stylish vibe because the tray holds everything together. Stack items on top of each other and change heights.
