My life and home is cluttered with electrical cords, strips, and USB charging cables. Fortunately, my pre-war apartment was rewired at some point in the 1980s or 90s and has a decent amount of wall outlets. Before I bought this place, I lived in a one-bedroom brownstone apartment that only had five outlets. Talk about a confusing maze of extension cords and the ever-present fear that one of the two fuses will blow.

Of course, anyone with storage space or a garage knows that the things we own somehow expand to fill whatever space we have for them. The same seems to be the case with retail outlets; cords and cables multiply depending on the number of available (or unavailable) plugs. At least that’s how it goes in my sixteen-outlet, two-bedroom home.

One outlet in particular had become a squiggly, unsightly pile of electronic chaos. It’s the one I use to charge my USB bike lights, my bike GPS, my smartwatch, my old MacBook Pro, my ancient tiny iPod that I use while running, and my Kindle. It is also an outlet that powers numerous light sources, an industrial sewing machine, and various electronics. Before this cord could grow into something that could strangle me in my sleep, I decided that something had to be done to stop it.
Since I’m not a big fan of furniture with chipboard components that need to be assembled, I was a little hesitant about ordering this folding table. I was afraid it wouldn’t go well with everything else I have – an eclectic mix of natural wood furniture from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. I was pleasantly surprised by this table. The warm, rustic patina on the chipboard works well with my decor, and the black steel frame and legs add a bit of a vintage look, in addition to being durable. The parts were well labeled and assembly was pretty easy, but following the instructions that come with the kit is definitely a must.
More than half of the top folds up, revealing two three-pin power outlets, two USB outlets, and more than enough space to house the power strip and my mass of cords and chargers. The flip top has cord grooves on each side, a shelf underneath, and a fabric pocket organizer at the end to stash the remote, headphones, and more. A durable black cord runs from the bottom of the storage compartment to power everything. It’s also a large, narrow, unobtrusive size.

The best thing about this Vasagle table is that it neatly (and stylishly) gives me the space to hide the chaos I need. In a world full of devices and sometimes overwhelming technology, being able to put some of that in a quiet and enclosed space makes me happy – which I could probably extrapolate into some kind of analogy about the state of the world or my own mind. if I thought about it long enough. But I will spare you this journey.
If you also have some particularly unruly electrical clutter that won’t fit into one of these cute cable organizers, the VASAGLE desk might be just what you need. And it can even change your life.
