About it. Do you have those plans too? Because that’s how the project started. I procrastinated like you wouldn’t believe because I wasn’t really sure how it would turn out. So that was the easiest solution.

“Adding Style with Tile” is winding down in March Reuben Nation, and I’m so excited to have been asked to participate! You can find all the step-by-step details of this project on Reuben Nation!

This poor little side table has history. My grandfather (aka Pappy) gave me this table a few years ago. It sat in my garage all this time (surprise! surprise!) because I just didn’t know what in the world to do with it. It’s short, for one…. What do you even put on a small side table? Second, there was just

Then I realized, it doesn’t matter if I don’t know how I’m going to use it. What was important was challenging myself to do my first “real” tiling project!

Some of you may remember the post I did last year about finding decorating inspiration in public toilets. The women’s bathroom at this Latin restaurant near my old job spoke to me the moment I saw it.

I loved the tile, and thought I could somehow recreate it with a permanent marker. I just didn’t know when and where I would do it in my house or what piece of furniture I would do it on.

This little side table was perfect! It already had a little inset on top where the tile would sit nicely. And then I can put that silver vase on top (which I already own), inspired by them

Normally I don’t sand, but when a table is sticky like this, you want to smooth things out first, so I used fine and paper.

Why did I think it would be a good idea to doodle the pattern on all the tiles before I cut them out and adhered them? }}}}

When I laid them all out, they wouldn’t all fit on the table. There was about a 1/2″ overhang on one side.

. This is my fault. I thought I could just seal the top with sealer. Even so, I should have waited until they were cut from my 7″ Ryobi wet tile. Because I didn’t realize that everything that touches a permanent marker gets erased.

I probably could have used tile snipers, but honestly, I really wanted to try out my new wet saw. 🙂

The only last time I used wet tile was last year at the Haven Conference during the demo. I was ready to face my fear of using it alone (with safety gear of course! I made sure I wore safety glasses, long sleeves, no jewelry, work gloves, and ear protection, (such as these Ryobi Phone Works Noise Canceling Headphones).

You can imagine my frustration when I put all the freshly cut and freshly matted tiles on the table after carving, only to find that there was no way to save the designs.

So I went ahead and spread on the tile adhesive, AcrylPro, and installed the tiles, then wiped off the rest of the marker so I could start over and prepare to grout. Because these were small tiles, I didn’t need tile spacers. I just set them all together and tried to make sure they were perfectly set and flat.

Next, I added some water to the unsanded grout, mixed it according to the directions, and used a grout float to push the grout into the grout lines. When it dried a bit, I used a grout sponge to clean off the excess. This will leave a mist. Just use a clean towel to clean it.

I decided to use this crystal clear enamel to “set” the marker design. I got a little “happy” in some places and left souping puddles, parts where the design started to run a little. Ugh!! Thankfully, it was minor.

If you are baking your tile (the recommended way to set a permanent marker), I’ve read that you should put the tile in before the oven heats up, and then let it cool when the oven is off. Leave it in the oven. . Set it at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. I will try next time!!! DUH….

I needed something to hide the edges of the tile that were exposed. This wood trim molding from Home Depot was just right, about $1.50 a piece!

I painted the trim and used my Ryobi Bread Nailer to adhere it. I simply but used a miter box saw for the corners (see this post for more information on using a miter saw box to join trim corners at 45 degree angles). You can also use gorilla glue to hold these clips in place. (See my video on how to use Gorilla Glue here). If you are using a brad nailer, use a wood filler for the smaller holes.

Whoa! I’m so glad it turned out well! I was confused for a minute there…or maybe 1000 minutes…..but I love black and white together, especially with this silver vase, which I like to have on the bathroom ceiling. Reminds me of tiles!

He hadn’t noticed the vase before when it was in the family room. But now that it’s sitting outside, he can’t help but make funny faces at the funky reflection.

This reflection is big, what will it do to your hindquarters? I caught her doing it, big boots and all! lol.

Overall, I am totally smitten with this piece and can’t wait to show it to my grandpa! I don’t think he’ll think it’s the same piece!
