Do you remember the coolest cooler? A $13 million Kickstarter project that promised a portable cooler with built-in speakers and charging that turned into one of the biggest crowdfunded disasters of all time? Good. Hold that thought.

Sobro is a crowdfunded cooler/coffee table hybrid that offers a built-in speaker, chargers (two USB, two wall plugs), LED lights, and a mini-fridge available on Indiegogo for crowdfunding. Apparently this is a completely different product from a completely different company, but it’s not
So let’s go with Sobro on its own merits. The Sobro itself only exists in prototype form so far, but there appears to be a working version of the device that promises to offer a fridge, chargers, lights and speakers. The company is also touting integrated touch panel controls hidden in the top of the table, which certainly seems possible.
But then there are costs. According to the Indiegogo page, the Sobro will retail for a whopping $1,499. But it’s available on Indiegogo for early backers for between $499 and $699, which sounds almost too good to be true. The promise of a September delivery date also raises some eyebrows, given the complexity and size of the Sobro and the fact that the product is still in the prototype stage.

On the plus side, the company that listed it on Indiegogo is StoreBound, a “product innovation company” that helps inventors turn their ideas into reality. The company has a history of helping others bring their products to market, and it’s certainly not the worst pedigree for a crowdfunding project.
Ultimately, it’s always important to use your best judgment when using any crowdfunded device. But in the case of Sobro, I’ll definitely believe it when I see it.
