One of our first DIY construction projects back when we started blogging was an amazing DIY driftwood coffee table that we built from scratch using driftwood from Dreher Island. It’s been a few years, but this thing still looks amazing!
We built this DIY driftwood coffee table four years ago when the only tools I had were a drill (it was an exclusive brand with little to no power) and a hacksaw.

Having a large selection of good quality tools certainly helps and expands your options, but you can get by without a garage full of power tools. When I got involved in this project, I had no idea what I was doing.
You can look at some old photos and see that I used rope to hold these pieces of wood while I figured out the puzzle of how to make the driftwood base.
If you have access to driftwood via a beach or lake, you can do this. My suggestions are to look for a few larger pieces with forks that you can use as a base.

Then simply add different branches and create enough smooth contact points at the top for the glass or wooden surface to rest on.
I went to the store and found something that was the closest color to the wood. Not the best at hiding.
You can’t really see a lot of the screw heads because I mostly screwed in from the bottom of the branch.

Second, I would recommend not having pieces sticking out of the base that serve no purpose.
I designed it so that a few pieces kind of stood out from the other pieces, but there was no composite construction.

She cut them off and the protruding part broke off right next to the screw. Well, lesson learned.
We still use it as a main coffee table in the sunroom. It’s amazing and I’ve since learned to work with driftwood on other projects like this starry mirror, wedding cupcake stand, candle holders and picture frames.
When I started, we found two good pieces of driftwood with some twigs that I knew would work well as a base.

I figured out a way to put them together and then used some 3 1/2″ screws to secure them.
The large pieces worked well as a solid base, but I used some angled pieces to make sure it was stable on all sides.
We bought a large round piece of glass for the top of the table for $5 off Craigslist, but needed a solid base underneath.

My first thought was to try laying out some longer, straight pieces of driftwood as the flat top of the glass, but after a few attempts at assembling the puzzle, I decided it wasn’t going to work.
So the best plan was to attach some curved parts to the already built base that would stabilize the glass top.
I can’t tell you how many times I tried putting the glass surface on different pieces of wood and trying to fit them and make the glass even.

In the end, I was very happy that I was able to figure out the puzzle that was this table and make something that was stable and had enough pieces touching where the glass would be so that it wouldn’t fall no matter where you pressed it. glass
Then we decided to seal it all up like we did when renovating this side table. We let the stamp dry and brought it inside.
After cleaning the glass top and placing it on top, I was amazed to create a coffee table out of random driftwood.

I’m really happy with how this table turned out and it’s nice to have a place to put a glass or a book on the sofa next to the side tables.
